Sewing and Art Classes for Everyone

Real Skills. Tailored for You. Taught with Love.

I’m Rose, owner of Uptown Atelier. It is my joy both to create and to teach. I have been an artist as long as I can remember, and I began sewing in 1988. I have been a teacher for two decades. But most importantly, I believe in what I do. I adapt my teaching style to different students’ needs. I try my best to make my classes both informative and fun. Come learn with me!

What Makes Us Different?

Creative classes should be creative. Don’t you think?

While there is nothing wrong with the paint by numbers approach when it comes to relaxing and having fun, it’s not the best way to truly learn. Classes that focus on completing a project with every individual completing one step at a time all together may be quick and efficient, but they do not allow for adaptability, and do not ensure retention of the learning experience. Also, you don’t get to choose what to sew or paint! That’s why I do things differently. Each class focuses on a specific skill set at a specific level, but you get to choose from a number of project options. Lessons will focus on mastering the skill, with time for you to apply it to your project during open work time. You’ll also have time to work at home, or come and use my low-cost open studio hours if you don’t have your own equipment.

There is more than one way to learn, and so there should be more than one way to teach. There are no one-size-fits-all classes here!

My teaching style is a blend of real skills, creativity, and warmth. It’s normal to have creative anxiety. I can help you through it. I can teach you to make well tailored clothes and paint stunning paintings. But most importantly, I will honor your individuality and share what I know with love. It’s equally important to me that you came away from a class with real skills and that you had fun and smiled a lot. Everyone is welcome at Uptown Atelier. I am honored to serve you.

How I teach

  • Helping you into your creative energy

  • Creating a welcoming, inclusive environment is essential!

  • Responsive to student learning style

  • Choice of projects!

  • Practice exercises to master skills, so you’re proud of your project

  • Yes, there’s homework! It helps you remember and practice!

  • I have solutions for any support you need outside of class

  • Class time is for immersing yourself in the experience. I have lesson support materials so you can be present instead of worrying about remembering everything

My goal is for every student to enjoy the present moment in the class, complete a project, and be able to transfer their new skill set to an equivalent level project on their own after the class! No more not finishing the project you started, or being lost and unable to continue when the class is done. I’ve structured the class so you get just the right amount of support to meet your needs.
